The Interview · Getting to What They Haven't Said

Course description
All interviews produce quotes; the best ones produce a perspective that didn't exist before the conversation began. The most challenging subjects aren't the hostile ones — they're the people so fluent in their own field that they've stopped explaining it. This course teaches how to prepare well enough to ask what no one has asked, hold silence, hear the sentence a conversation turns on and stay with it, and shape a transcript into prose that reads like the person at their sharpest. Students work with real subjects, not classmates, and leave with finished interview-driven work for their portfolio. The techniques apply to founder-led storytelling, product development, profile writing, and podcasting — and to any professional setting where you work with experts to translate their thinking for a wider audience.

You'll Walk Away With

  • Command of the interview — silence, follow-up, and a better understanding of when to go deeper and pivot inside of the conversation

  • A process for shaping transcript into prose without flattening the voice

  • A final project of an interview-driven piece ready to submit and publish

  • A digital badge you can post on your LinkedIn or share with your professional network

Ideal For

  • Communications, brand, and product professionals who interview executives, customers, and subject-matter experts

  • Journalists, profile writers, and essayists who build from other people's stories

  • Podcasters and oral historians

  • Anyone who has to produce engaging stories and content out of someone else's expertise

Course Details

  • Ten weekly three-hour sessions; in person or live Zoom

  • No prerequisites

From the Study to the Page: Writing from Research, Reports, and Technical Documents

Course description
Every writer eventually has to work from material outside of their own experience — a study, a report, a technical document, a body of scholarship. It is easy to get caught up in either flattening it into something inaccurate or reproducing it in language that doesn’t land. This course cultivates a skill that sets storytellers apart. You'll learn how to read a study for what it actually claims, find the argument inside a dense document, keep precision while cutting jargon, and create a piece that conveys an idea a reader didn't know they were interested in. We'll work from real source material — peer-reviewed research, industry reports, and technical documents — and you'll leave with one finished piece built from a source you didn't write. Especially useful now, when generating a plausible summary is easy and knowing whether it's right is not.

You'll Walk Away With

  • The ability to find the story or argument buried inside a dense document — and know it's the one the evidence actually supports

  • Precision without jargon — how to simplify without distorting

  • A final project of a finished piece, sourced and workshopped

  • A digital badge you can post on your LinkedIn or share with your professional network

Ideal For

  • Communications, brand, and product professionals writing from reports, data, and whitepapers

  • Journalists and essayists covering science, health, technology, or policy

  • Newsletter and longform writers who work from research

  • Anyone who needs complicated material to land with a non-specialist reader
